Beyond Priscilla Podcast

“Growing up in Parramatta being gay was completely foreign. The idea of being an artist even more so!”

Gavin Roach

A lot’s changed since ‘The Boys in the Band’ first shocked Broadway audiences in 1968. The play’s bawdy dialogue and its queer characters dragged theatregoers out of the closet kicking and screaming. Angels in America, Bent, Fun Home, Holding the Man, and even Aussie musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert owe much to ‘The Boys in the Band.’ It put homosexuality centre stage.

This brings me to Melbourne based-playwright, director and performer, Gavin Roach. The all-rounder has created many LGBTQ characters since being bullied as a child and staged theatre productions around Australia and New Zealand. Confessions of a Grindr Addict, I Can’t Say The F Word and Beyond Pricilla, just to name a few. I started following Gavin during rehearsals of Disco Pigs and thought the impresario would be terrific on Noel Anderson’s 15 Mins of Fame chatting about the business of creating adult theatre 🎭
