Kylie Minogue has been singing in my headphones and on stage since the 1980s. She rose to fame with hits like “I Should Be So Lucky” and “The Loco-Motion,” she has released 17 studio albums, won numerous awards, including two Grammys, and sold over 80 million records worldwide while accruing 3.3 billion streams on Spotify alone. She is an actress, singer, writer, fashionista, global icon, winemaker, and cancer survivor. I first saw her perform at Sydney’s Bicentennial Concert in 1988 and have since seen Kylie perform around the globe and at the Sydney Mardi Gras multiple times.
This brings me to Kylie’s biggest worldwide concert tour in years, The Tension Tour, which I saw in Melbourne on Saturday night. The show celebrates her two recent “Tension albums” and features her greatest hits and new tracks, including “Good as Gone” and her latest single, “Last Night I Dreamt I Fell in Love.” The two-hour spectacular had ticket holders dancing from start to finish, and Kylie changed outfits five times for good measure. The setlist (let’s face it, with so many hits, Kylie can’t please everyone) included classics like “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “Spinning Around,” and “Love at First Sight.” The stage design received a lot of criticism in early reviews; however, I found it futuristic, colourful and functional with fun graphics and a top-notch light display. The show is divided into five segments, with Kylie triumphantly leading as the ringmaster. Supported by her troupe of dancers, the 56-year-old dynamo shows no signs of slowing down. Her vocals are impeccable, her stamina impressive, and her charisma utterly infectious.
At one point, she moved to a second stage, strategically placed smack dab in the middle of the arena. There, under a mirrorball, she belted out tracks from her disco album, mostly recorded at home during the COVID lockdown. The sight of her charging through the audience to the second stage caused a wild commotion. For me, the standout song of the night was “Confide in Me.” Like Kylie, this song has only gotten better with age. Dressed in black and shrouded in fog, Kylie beckoned us to “Stick or Twist.” By then, the audience was completely entranced, dancing for over 90 minutes, and was ready to follow her lead anywhere. Kylie’s ability to connect with her audience and deliver a high-energy performance is unparalleled, and like her Las Vegas residency, this tour is a blast from start to finish.
Kylie Minogue’s Tension Tour is a must-see for any fan, old or new. It’s a spectacle that showcases Kylie’s stage presence, talent, and ability to reinvent herself while staying true to her dance roots. With slick choreography, dazzling costumes, and flashy stage designs, the Tension Tour is a chance for Kylie lovers to “Come into Her World.” Kylie’s ability to make you feel like she is singing just for you creates an intimate atmosphere, even in a venue as large as the Rod Laver Arena. If you haven’t had a chance to experience Minogue’s magic live, then this is the perfect opportunity. Kylie is, after all, a global icon who has survived in the cutthroat, youth-oriented music scene. Spend an evening with Kylie Minogue, her band, and her dancers, and be part of this musical event. I swear you won’t be able to get Kylie and her Tension Tour out of your head!
