“I don’t have anything big planned. Just a giant blowout party with all the Barbies, and planned choreography, and a bespoke song. You should stop by.” — Barbie
I hit the remote last night to watch the much-hyped Barbie Movie on Netflix. I didn’t see it at the cinema. “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig, is a plastic fantasy come to life … or a garish pink nightmare? You can decide which one it is. I’m sure some will love it, and some will hate it. The film sets out to empower women but its glossy facade and synthetic heart let it down. While there are funny moments, the central theme that men rule the world starts to run out of steam by the halfway mark. Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie, like the doll, lacks a soul and a vagina…and the script and plot meander hopelessly in the third act. However, Ken does well without a penis and attempts in act three to save the show from going down the plastic pink gurgler with a musical number, but even Ryan Gosling can’t give Barbie what she’s searched for in the last two hours…substance. While I didn’t hate the film, the irony that the leading man (Ryan Gosling brilliant as Ken) steals the show from under Robbie’s powdered nose, in a film about patriarchy, is a big mistake.
The fact that Barbie made so much money at the box office around the globe says, ‘We must all be desperate for light entertainment!’ Or maybe we’ve been marketed and sold something mediocre that we didn’t need! ⭐️⭐️
